Failure to reach agreement today over the last threatened redundancy at the Herald and Times will lead to a ballot for industrial action. Despite constructive engagement on restructuring the newsroom in recent weeks, the wheels are about to come off as management appear unwilling to compromise over one post. A single photographer has been identified for compulsory redundancy and the union has written to management alerting them that any CR is unacceptable and will trigger a ballot for action.
There is still a chance of re-deployment and both sides are exploring whether that is a possibility, with consultation meetings organised for 4pm (Thursday). A vote for industrial action will almost certainly impact on company plans for further restructuring before the end of the year.
