Romanes Coup at Newsquest

NUJ members were shocked by the sudden announcement that the senior management team at Newsquest will all be leaving by the end the year.

MD Tim Blott is apparently going for early retirement after nearly 13 years at the helm and long standing HR Manager Carole Mason is taking a severance package. The Regional Finance Director Andrea Mills is also leaving and relocating to their Yorkshire end of the business.

Details of the changes were flagged up on the company intranet creating a multiple shock. As well as the three surprise exits, the announcement also informed staff of a transfer of responsibilities to Graham Morrison current MD of Romanes Group along with his HR Manager Neil McAllister as replacement “high heid yins”.

The Romanes Group (formerly Clyde & Forth Ltd), owners of Dunfermline Press, Greenock Telegraph and a host of other titles in Ayrshire and the Clyde coast were taken over by Newsquest earlier this year. The current management team has been tied up in widespread consultation with the NUJ in recent months as part of an editorial restructure.

NUJ National organiser Paul Holleran said:”It was a complete shock but with hindsight there has been a few developments recently which now make sense. However we have worked very closely and constructively with Graham and Neil for many years and expect that relationship to continue.”
